A small selection of the infinite number of beautiful walks available in the immediate area around Twice Brewed...

Steel Rigg - Housteseads - Vindolanda

A circular walk of around 8 miles taking in the magnificent Crag Lough and Housesteads Fort - an excellent example of a Roman infantry fort. The walk also takes in the famous Vindolanda, a working dig of great importance.

We recommend walking from West to East if the day is very windy as the prevailing wind is from the west.

Birdoswald - Willowford - Carvoran - Steel Rigg

This walk starts at Birdoswald (another Roman fort with an interesting museum) and follows the Wall through a fine stretch of wall remains and a Roman bridge abutment at Willowford. The trail continues through Gilsland and Greenhead up to Carvoran (the Roman Army Museum) and across the highest point back to Steel Rigg.

A total of around 8 miles.

Chollerford - Once Brewed

This is much more strenuous walk following the Wall from Chesters Roman Cavalry Fort up past Brocolitia and the Temple of Mithras past Housesteads Fort and back to Steel Rigg.

A total of around 13 miles with stunning views

Staward Gorge - Allen Banks - Bardon Mill - Steel Rigg

This walk takes in the beautiful Staward Gorge (maintained by the National Trust) and follows the River Allen through the gorge to Allen Banks then the walk proceeds through the pretty hamlet of Beltingham to Bardon Mill. From there, up the valley to Vindolanda ending at Steel Rigg.

A total of around 13 miles.

South Tyne - Haltwhistle - Cawfields - Steel Rigg

This walk starts in the beautiful South Tyne valley just to the south of the magnificent Lambley Viaduct. It then proceeds along the valley to the small market town of Haltwhistle and onward to the famous Haltwhistle Gorge. The walk heads up towards Cawfields on Hadrian's Wall and follows the Wall east to Steel Rigg.

A total of around 10 miles.

Stonehaugh - Steel Rigg

This walk takes in a section of the famous Pennine Way and moves across a mixture of forest and open moor land heading south towards Hadrian's Wall.

A total of around 12 miles.
