Day 1 Craster and Dunstanburgh Castle
Drive to Craster, a charming old fishing harbour, about an hour and a quarter's drive away. Take the brerathtaking coastal footpath to Dunstanburgh Castle, a magnificent 14th century ruin. www.english-heritage.org.uk After exploring the castle, walk back to Craster for a late lunch and a look around the village. Drive back by the beautiful Northumberland Coastal Route, stopping off in Alnmouth for a walk on the beach and a cup of tea. |

Day 2 Rothbury and Cragside
Spend the morning visiting the charming town of Rothbury (about an hours drive) and then afterwards explore nearby Cragside House and grounds just outside the town. Cragside is an extraordinary Victorian house and estate, once home of industrialist Lord Armstrong. www.nationaltrust.org.uk |

Day 3 Chesters, Hexham and Corbridge
Spend the morning at Chesters (10 minutes drive) stopping first at Chesters Roman Fort www.english-heritage.org.uk then looking around the walled garden www.chesterswalledgarden.fsnet.co.uk. Have lunch at the Hadrian Hotel in Wall village, just a couple of miles away then move on 3 miles to Hexham, a pretty ancient market town with its majestic abbey and old gaol to visit, then a further 4 miles to Corbridge, a lovely village with its own Roman site www.english-heritage.org.uk |

Day 4 Beamish Museum
Spend a full day at Beamish, The North of England Open Air Museum
www.beamish.org.uk about 1 hour's drive away. It's worth trying to get there at 10.00 when it opens because there's a terrific amount to see.

Day 5 Wallington Hall
Take a leisurely drive (about 45 minutes) to Wallington calling at Kirkharle Courtyard www.kirkharlecourtyard.net for coffee and to look at the craft shops. Moving on to Wallington, a magnificent mansion with extensive gardens www.nationaltrust.org.uk Visit the Walled Garden before having lunch in the restaurant. Spend the afternoon exploring the house and the rest of the grounds. |

Day 6 Staward Gorge and Allen Banks, Lambley Viaduct and Carvoran
Drive to Staward Gorge and Allen Banks (10 minutes drive) www.nationaltrust.org.uk and explore a natural river gorge with beautiful views. On to the Lambley Viaduct (about 20 minutes drive). Park your car at the South Tyne Trail car park, then walk across the viaduct to view the river South Tyne from on high. The views are spectacular. Treat yourself to lunch at the nearby Wallace Arms at Featherstone then drive back via Haltwhistle, a quaint small market town, to visit Carvoran (the Roman Army Museum) www.vindolanda.co.uk, just 5 miles from Twice Brewed. |

Day 7 Kielder Water and Forest Park
A leisurely country drive to Kielder (about 35 miles). Take the ferry around the lake, go walking, cycling or pony trekking, visit the Kielder Water Exhibition and the Bird of Prey Centre. A wide range of activities is available. www.kielder.org

Day 8 Alnwick Castle and Garden
About an hours drive away, visit Alnwick Castle with its famous garden. The home of the Dukes of Northumberland since the 14th Century. Most famously in recent years, the Castle has featured as 'Hogwarts' in the first 2 Harry Potter movies. The Alnwick Garden is one of the most exciting contemporary gardens to be developed in the last century, a magical landscape created from a unique idea. www.alnwickcastle.com www.alnwickgarden.co.uk

Day 9 Housesteads, Vindolanda and Crag Lough
Starting at Steel Rigg car park in Twice Brewed, walk along the Wall a little way to enjoy the view over Crag Lough. Move on to Housesteads, www.english-heritage.org.uk a distance of about 3 miles, either on foot continuing along the Wall or by car. Explore the fort, the best preserved of all the outposts on the Wall. Next stop Vindolanda, www.vindolanda.co.uk a fascinating fort and settlement a couple of miles away just south of the Wall, which can be reached on foot, by car or on the regular Hadrians Wall bus. Refreshments are available at both places. Return to Twice Brewed on foot, by bus or by car. |
